Welcome to At the Market, your place to browse what’s in season in the Land of Oaks and Roses.
Hi friends! Welcome back. Today is about barrel and baggy jeans. I completely understand the hesitation. But, let me explain why you already know how to wear them.
There’s a style formula we’ve mastered: oversized on top + tight on bottom. Think skinny jeans and a flowy going out top (RIP), or leggings and an oversized sweatshirt. This formula works because it creates balance and contrast, which both do great things for an outfit. What’s happening with pants is actually the same formula - just flipped!
I waited until now to do this story because I think it’s hard to flip the formula when it’s freezing. I wouldn’t ask you to try tight on top during big cozy sweater season. But with warmer weather on the horizon, now’s a great time to consider how oversized on bottom + tight on top might work for you. When I say “tight” I mean it relative to something oversized. Tight on top can be easy. A white tee for example! These jeans do a lot on their own, which takes the pressure off the rest of your outfit. Once you find a pair you love, they actually become a throw-on and go piece that will still leave you feeling dressed. You’ll also see how these shapes open you up to tops you hadn’t considered before.
Here are my favorites. Happy browsing!
I’ve seen all three of these look incredible on women who happen to be over 30 and moms (including Frankie on Main Street!) They all come in a bunch of different colors.
Citizens of Humanity Miro Jeans. Notice the easy styling with a white tee. For anyone else under 5’3 skip the tailor with petite sizing.
Frame Bubble Jeans. The most exaggerated of the three (size down if you’re in between sizes.) Olivia15 for $45 off or 15% off sitewide
Madewell Darted Barrel Jean. A great option if you just want to dip a toe into this pool.
See? Baggy can be right for us too.
Citizens of Humanity Ayla Baggy Jeans. More sizing/colors here + petite range here.
Ozma of California Field Pant. There are so many customer photos of these on their site! You have the option to size down for a less exaggerated take too.
AYR The Secret Sauce. Another dip a toe in option as these get baggier as you wear them based on your body.
See you next week!
With much love,
Olivia

Small Beautiful Things: 7 Travel Heroes
Hi friends! Welcome back. Despite runny noses and not enough time to pack, we’re in Palm Beach this week. My husband had work here so we made an adventure out of it. None of us had been here before. Here are 7 things I’m so glad I brought on this trip to give you a head start on wherever you’re going next!
Hold On
Is it just me or does it feel like life as we know it is about to change? I wonder if older generations felt this way too. Everyday there’s a new story about the loss of something someone thought would last forever: a house, a job, an institution. Actually, none of the jobs I had in my 20s exist anymore the way they did then. They’ve turned into something else. Not bad. Just different. I genuinely wonder if college will be around, or relevant, by the time my kids turn eighteen. The ground under my feet always felt like concrete but it’s starting to feel like sand.
I have those AYR jeans and love them!
I have like 12 pairs of barrel jeans! 😳
