This isn’t a practical getting dressed story. This is a fun getting dressed story. Most things in life aren’t what you imagine they’ll be, but getting dressed with Penelope at this age (she just turned 6) is EXACTLY what I imagined it would be. To me (us), mermaids are at ease, in flow, deeply connected to their surroundings and people. They’re mysterious, curious and free. They understand and trust their own magic. They know how special it is because they know how special we all are.

Now let’s dive into what these mermaids are wearing…

Dinner in Town

Mother: Earrings, Sweater, Silk Boxers, Boat Shoes, Purse // Daughter: Beading Kit (doubles as a stay at the table activity), Dress, Sandals, Purse

I’m putting this one first because it’s Penelope’s favorite. She loves a good pearl. I love when outfits are as easy as they are pretty. Mermaids never want to be uncomfortable, especially at dinner! Also, this is the first time I’ve ever liked a boat shoe.

A Party

Mother: Dress, Necklace, Bag, Sandals // Daughter: Dress, Hair Clips, Bag, Sandals

Obviously mermaids can’t do high heels but these have just a little something to make you feel like you’re at a party. I’ve loved this dress since the second I saw it. Penelope leans heavily towards pink but mermaid season has opened her up to more blue.

Honorable Mention: If you have something more formal coming up, this is incredible too.

The Sea

Mother: Hat, Swim Top, Swim Bottom, Jellies, Cover Up, Big Bag // Daughter: Suit, Goggles, Cover Up, Crocs, Starfish Jibbit, Seashell Jibbit, Seashell Guide

One big bag to share but we all know who’s carrying it. These nature guides are amazing! Penelope wears this swimsuit endlessly.

Sundays

Mother: Sunglasses, Hemp Shirt and Boxers, Seashell Necklace, Bag, Flip Flops // Daughter: Seashell Jewelry Set, Sunglasses, Sweatshirt, Track Shorts, Sandals

Shine your light! These have to be the coolest flip flops I’ve ever seen. These shorts (and sunglasses) are from one of my favorite newly discovered kid’s brands.

Meetings & Back to School

Mother: Top, Pants, Fish Earrings, Bag, Shoes // Daughter: Dress, Backpack (code Olivia15), Mommy and Me Bracelets, Camp/School Shoes

I know this feels early! But I picked pieces you could incorporate into summer outfits now too. This is the perfect dress for Penelope to get to wear sequins to school without wearing SEQUINS to school. And how great are these pants? And these little fish! I’ve never resonated aesthetically with a ballet flat but a closed toe, flat shoe is undeniably useful so when I saw these I got excited! The bracelets are a sweet tool for separation and you can customize them for entering any grade.
