How We Grow: Heidi Fiedler
"I don’t think we constantly need to have a project or a work in progress, but we do need to think of ourselves as creative beings who need to express ourselves."
How We Grow explores how we actually change, and grow. Pour yourself a cup of something warm and join me for wisdom, instruction and comfort too.
I get a lot of questions about Substack. Mostly from people who want to start one (for the logistics, see here.) If Substack is calling your name, go for it, and let me know how I can help you. But, I think the interest represents a deeper need too. We all want to leave some kind of mark somewhere. And that can be a hard thing to do in this real, responsibility-filled world of ours.
One of the reasons I was drawn to the fashion industry was that it let me have the corporate job while being in the creative environment I was really after. I wasn’t making any of my own marks, but I got to be close to people who were. It was classic Julia Cameron shadow artist: someone who orbits the thing they truly want, convincing themselves they already have it. A painter might do marketing for a museum. A writer might be a book agent. An entrepreneur might join a VC firm. They have their dream job, and still, something’s missing… This isn’t about quitting your job (when I say “job” I’m always including stay-at-home moms), but it is about beginning to wonder more about that missing feeling.
is a creative coach, writer, editor, mother, and my Substack friend. Her newsletter, Nebula Notebook, is a warm, welcoming community of creative mothers who dream of bringing their projects to life. As a coach, she has helped hundreds of writers access their truest work. She teaches us how to notice and nurture the little creative seeds most of us can already feel somewhere inside ourselves.I’m so excited to share her with you! In this conversation, we discuss:
How do we start when we’re so tired?
Does it matter?
What happens over time when we ignore an inner pull?
Mom guilt around carving out time.
How to keep going when we don’t like what we started making.
The magic of it all!
