Welcome to Rose Garden, your place to find small beautiful things in the Land of Oaks and Roses.

I love writing this series every season, but fall is my favorite. It feels like a lot of change is happening or about to. Maybe that’s why fall’s stabilizing energy feels especially good to me right now. Writing this gave me a chance to marinate in it and I hope the same happens for you when you read it. Read on for a great watch-with-your-husband movie, dress perfection, mandarin buttons, and more things I’m loving this fall. Plus, one thing I’m not!

  1. I love this photograph of the late artist Ruth Asawa with her six (!) kids. I came across it in this new book about her, which explains:

“To portray an artist’s identity as not simply coincident with her motherhood but dependent upon it was utterly unheard of in midcentury America.”

  2. I’ve had this Matta dress for years. It feels so good on. It’s one of those pieces I wear in the summer, and then with a cozy sweater when the temperature starts to drop. It’s really perfect.

  1. This underwear, which I’m now wearing more than Hanky Panky (that’s really saying a lot.) I love it in black too. #sponsoredmention (This is my first partnership on Substack - more on this below and thank you for supporting!)

  2. I’m not a scary movie person but my husband convinced me to watch Sinners one night after we put the kids to bed and it was so good!! A great one for anyone else who couldn’t convince their husband to watch TSITP.
