Welcome to At the Market, your place to browse what’s in season in Land of Oaks and Roses.

Hello my friends,

Happy Friday.

As I was falling asleep the other night I was thinking about all the bad reasons why people buy things. And one bad reason in particular: wanting to feel included.

We’re seeing a lot of sameness right now. We can 100% blame our algorithms for this. It’s easy to want something because “everyone” has it. It can feel like there’s this beautiful universe out there where everything is better, and that bag/jacket/shoe/ring is your entry fee.

That’s a false story though. And buying something for that reason will leave you feeling empty inside. I think wanting to be included is one of the worst reasons to buy something.

Instead, here are some good reasons to buy something:

  • It resonates with you personally.

Pankou jackets remind me of the clothes my late grandma made for me as a kid. Every time I see one I’m reminded of her, her love of fashion (and me.)

  • It reflects an authentic desire.

Here comes my woo woo side but I think our desires are whispers from future versions of ourselves. And fashion can be a powerful bridge towards the growth that has your name on it.

  • It represent a love that’s uniquely yours.

It’s ok (great even) to buy something just because you love it! Just make sure that love is actually coming from within you.

  • It solves a problem.

If you want to start running, you need running shoes. If your job requires a blazer…. we all have our lists.

In an attempt to pull us out of algorithmic trance, here are 6 incredible brands your algorithm probably isn’t showing you. I hope you’ve never seen them before!
